After a tree has been cut down the tree stump remains stuck in the ground. Tree stumps can be difficult to remove because of the root system that still exists beneath the tree. Tree stumps also reveal the age of a tree by it's rings in the exposed bark. Sometimes a tree stump can grow into a new tree, this is called "regeneration".
Stumps can be stubborn to remove and they can either treated with chemicals, dug out or chopped up with a stump grinding machine.
After the stump has been removed, the ground can be covered over with dirt, mulch or sod.
